Municipal College took its birth under the auspices of REDS (Rourkela Educational Development Society ) in the year 1978 and within a span of 41 years it has proved itself to be an institution of excellence .
The college has been accredited by NAAC in 2016 with B + Grade (2nd Cycle) with a Grade Point of 2.67 .It is in receipt of World Bank Sponsored Institutional Development Grant (IDG) under the programme Odisha Higher Education Programme for Excellence and Equity (OHEPEE) of Govt. of Odisha , Department of Higher Education.It is also one of the leading college of Sambalpur Univesity having established its academic credentials over the years in University Examinations consistently.
In NCC and Sports and Games it has excelled continuously producing number a International Hockey players such as Peter Tirkey, Prabodh Tirkey, Ignace Tirkey and Lajarus Barla.

“The SSR is the self- assessment of the institution itself which is going for NAAC accreditation and re-accreditation.
Municipal College, Rourkela has not only excelled in the academics but also in sports and games, NCC at University ,State , National and International level.It has produced laurels over the past years in the above fields which is the hallmark as identification of the institution.
The college organizes Seminar , Study Tourr ,Field Visits ,Career Counselling and Self-Defense training for girls besides NCC and YRC. The students round the year are involved in such activities besides classroom teaching arena which is helpful in achieving their career objectives and goals.
